ChatGPT vs Claude for a shop

· Platforms

People ask me which one to pay for. I get it. The names are loud. The work is not.

If you run a shop, salon, or office around here, you don’t need a model bake-off. You need the tedious stuff to take less of the week: quotes, follow-ups, “what did we tell them last time.”

Here’s how I think about the two names everyone has heard.

ChatGPT

It’s the one most teams have already opened. Fine for a first draft, rewriting a messy email, or asking “how do I say this without sounding cold.” If one person on the floor will actually use it, start there. Don’t make them switch for sport.

Claude

Often calmer with long, fiddly text — a policy, a packet of notes, a thread of customer messages you paste in. If your week is “read this pile and tell me what matters,” it’s worth a look.

What neither one does

They don’t run the business. They don’t know your regulars, your pricing, or the way you talk on the phone. If you paste a customer name and a private note into a chat box, that’s a choice you are making. Keep the sensitive stuff out until you’ve decided what you’re willing to share.

The useful question isn’t “which one is smarter.” It’s “what repeats every week that a person already knows how to do, slowly.” Write that down. Try the same job in one tool. If the draft saves twenty minutes and you can still check it, keep it. If it makes more cleanup than it saves, drop it.

The platform is a means. The work is the point.
